CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- Six members of the Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams were named to the 2018 Indoor Track and Field All-ACC Academic team, as announced by the league office on Thursday (April 19).

Graduate-student Mike Marsella (Hope Valley, R.I.) and juniors Hilmar Jonsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) and Nace Plesko (Ljubljana, Slovenia) were named to the men’s team, while senior Holly Sullivan (Chester Springs, Pa.), junior Kelly McKee (Lenexa, Kan.) and freshman Brittany Jones (Bloomfield, Conn.) tabbed the honor on the women’s side.

McKee tabbed her second indoor All-ACC Academic honor. Plesko and Sullivan were named to the 2017 outdoor All-ACC Academic team.

At the ACC Championships, Marsella captured All-ACC second-team honors in the mile. He recorded a time of 4:04.82 to finish fourth in the finals and improve off his preliminary time of 4:05.68.

Jonsson finished as the conference runner-up in the weight throw, capturing a distance of 21.04m (69’0.5″). Jonsson recorded a career-best throw earlier in the season at the Michigan Power Five Invitational. He recorded a mark of 21.37m (70’1.25″), the second-best throw in Virginia history.

Plesko’s performance in the shot put at the conference championships earned him All-ACC honors. He had the fourth-best mark at the meet, recording a distance of 17.55m (57’7″).

In the women’s pentathlon, Sullivan finished fourth overall with a career-best score of 3,912, ranking third in UVA history with the performance. Additionally, she set a personal-best mark in three out of the pentathlon’s five events. Sullivan captured a personal-best performance in all five events during the season.

McKee finished as the conference runner-up in the triple jump, capturing a second-place finish at the ACC Championships. She recorded a jump of 12.84m (42’1.5″) to earn her third All-ACC honor in the event. Prior to the conference meet, McKee captured a career-best mark of 12.99m (42’7.5″), which ranks as the third-best jump in program history.

Jones recorded the first All-ACC honor of her college career in the shot put. She finished fifth in the meet, recording a distance of 15.21m (49’11”). Her performance ranks second in Virginia freshman records. Additionally, Jones set a UVA freshman record in the weight throw, capturing a mark of 16.24m (53’3.23″) at the ACC Championships.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes each conference student-athlete with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
