TAMPA, Fla.- Freshman Alfred Shirley III (Chesapeake, Va.) paced the Virginia men’s track and field team at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds on Friday (May 25), advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championships with his time in the 400m dash.

Shirley recorded the 11th-fastest performance in the 400m dash, posting a time of 45.84. His time set a UVA record in the event.

Junior Nace Plesko (Ljubljana, Slovenia) placed 35th in the discus. He threw a mark of 48.49m (159’1″).

Redshirt sophomore Matthew Novak (Glen Allen, Va.) ran a time of 9:26.80 in the 3000m steeplechase. His time placed him 44th in the event.

The NCAA East Preliminary Rounds serve as the qualifier for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. The top-12 finishers from each event will advance to the national meet.

The Cavaliers will conclude the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds tomorrow. The meet will begin at 8:45 a.m. with Virginia competing in its first event at 12:30 p.m.
