SCHENECTADY, N.Y. –On a day that featured four duals, the Cavaliers split action on Saturday (Nov. 10) as the Virginia (3-2) wrestling team took wins over Ithaca College and LIU Post, but dropped duals with No. 21 Wyoming and No. 12 Nebraska at the Journeymen Duals.

In the first dual of the day, the Cavaliers picked up a 41-0 win over Ithaca College (1-2), before dropping a hard-fought dual with No. 21 Wyoming (2-0) by a score of 21-9. Virginia then dropped a tight dual with No. 12 Nebraska (3-0) that came down to the final weight class before running away with a 47-3 victory over LIU Post (0-3) in the finale.

Redshirt sophomore Louie Hayes (Orland Park, Ill.) and redshirt junior Sam Krivus (Greensburg, Pa.) both won all four matches on the day. Hayes posted three bonus-point victories and also received a forfeit, while Krivus notched two bonus-point victories and a big decision over sixth-ranked Chad Red of Nebraska. It was one of two upsets for the Cavaliers against the Huskers as Jay Aiello (Chantilly, Va.) also posted a decision over No. 18 Eric Schultz.

“We saw some good things today,” said Virginia head coach Steve Garland. “The obvious highlight of the day was Sam Krivus knocking off the sixth-ranked wrestler in the country and a returning All-American from Nebraska. Jay Aiello also beat a nationally-ranked wrestler who beat him last year, so that was great to see his improvement there. The Nebraska dual was as close as it gets. We had a criteria, so if we win that last bout, we win the dual meet. Quinn Miller was so close to pulling that match for us.

We are proud of the way our guys competed for the most part today. This team is starting to come together. It’s a very young squad and they are improving rapidly. We’re really excited for what we have in the future.”

In the first dual of the day, the Cavaliers jumped out to a quick start and never looked back. A tech fall from Hayes started things rolling as Virginia used seven bonus-point victories, including four pin falls and two tech falls, to take the 41-9 victory over Ithaca College.

The second dual of the day again started with a strong performance from Hayes, who narrowly missed on a second bonus-point victory. The Cavaliers would only pick up wins in two other bouts against the Cowboys with Krivus and Will Schany (Blair, Neb.) taking decisions at 141 and 184 pounds, respectively, as No. 21 ranked Wyoming took the dual match by a score of 21-9.

Virginia jumped out to the early lead in the third dual of the day and the second consecutive match against nationally-ranked team, getting the result at three straight bouts against No. 12 Nebraska. A forfeit at 125 pound, followed by wins from Brian Courtney (Sayre, Pa.) and Krivus took the Cavaliers out to the advantage. The Huskers closed the gap, but a second upset in the dual – this one by Aiello – pulled the Cavaliers within striking distance before Nebraska locked up the win at heavyweight for the 21-15 victory.

The Cavaliers closed out the day with a dominating performance against LIU Post, picking up wins in nine weight classes on the way to a 47-3 victory over the Pioneers.

Virginia will return to action the weekend of Nov. 30 in competition at the Las Vegas Cliff Keen Invitational.
