Virginia Has Six Placewinners At Wolfpack Open
RALEIGH, N.C. –Six members of the Virginia wrestling team turned in place finishes at the Wolfpack Open over the weekend, leading a group of 13 wrestlers from the Virginia team in competition at the event. Nine wrestlers were competing in an unattached capacity.
Sophomore Jake Keating (Naperville, Ill.) and freshman Justin McCoy (New Paris, Pa.) tied for first at 157 pounds with both wrestlers advancing to the title bout, but did not face off in competition in the final round. Freshman Victor Marcelli (Massillon, Ohio) turned in a third-place finish at 184 pounds.
Keating went 3-0 on the afternoon, while McCoy went 4-0 in his half of the bracket. Marcelli went 3-1 on the day.
A trio of wrestlers posted sixth-place finishes with redshirt sophomore Sam Martino (Colonial Heights, Va.) at 149 pounds, sophomore Drew Peck (Chambersburg, Pa.) at 174 pounds and senior Will Schany (Blair, Neb.) at 184 pounds rounding out the placewinners for Virginia.
Martino and Peck both went 4-2 on the afternoon, while Schany went 4-1 with a medical forfeit in the fifth-place match.
Virginia will return to action at the Las Vegas Cliff Keen Invitational after a break for the Thanksgiving holiday. A two-day event, the Cliff Keen Invitational begins on Friday, November 30.
