CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –The No. 23 Virginia women’s tennis team (2-0) continues its season-opening homestand on Tuesday (Jan. 22) afternoon, hosting Richmond (0-1) in a 3 p.m. match at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.

Admission to all Virginia women’s tennis matches is free to the public.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE HOOS
Virginia opened the season over the weekend, hosting Quinnipiac and Army in a doubleheader at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers posted solid performances in each match, defeating Quinnipiac by a score of 6-1, before posting a 4-0 victory over Army in the second match of the day.
 
THREE PLAYERS MAKE UVA DEBUTS
Three players made their debut for the Cavaliers over the weekend with sophomore Vivian Glozman (Bellevue, Wash.) joining freshmen Sofia Munera (Pereira, Colombia) and Amber O’Dell (New Milford, N.J.) in action.
 
O’Dell went 2-0 in singles play on the weekend and combined with junior Chloe Gullickson (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) in doubles to also post a pair of doubles wins. O’Dell clinched both wins on the weekend with her singles victories. Glozman and Munera both went 1-0 in singles competition, and undefeated in doubles as well. Munera paired with senior Erica Susi (Vero Beach, Fla.) to go 2-0 in doubles, while Glozman paired with junior Hunter Bleser (New Braunfels, Texas) to go 1-0. 

VIRGINIA IN THE TEAM RANKINGS
The Cavaliers are the No. 23 ranked team in the nation according to the preseason Oracle/ITA Women’s Tennis Rankings. It’s right where the squad left off as Virginia finished the 2017-18 season ranked No. 23 nationally after advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

HOOS REPRESENTED IN THE INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS
The Cavaliers are also represented in the individual rankings. Following a strong fall season, the duo of senior Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Maine) and freshman Sofia Munera (Pereira, Colombia) are ranked No. 10 nationally in doubles. The tandem went 12-2 in the fall, winning the ITA Atlantic Regional and winning the consolation finals at the ITA Fall National Championships.

In singles, Kelley enters the dual season ranked No. 32 after posting a 10-5 record in the fall. She advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Atlantic Regional and earned an at-large bid to the ITA Fall National Championships, advancing to the Round of 16.

UP NEXT FOR THE HOOS
Virginia will go on the road this weekend to compete in the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Cavaliers will travel to compete in a four-team regional at No. 9 Oklahoma State. Virginia will face the ninth-ranked Cowgirls at 5 p.m. ET on Friday (Jan. 25). Also competing in the regional are No. 16 Kansas and No. 21 Illinois. The winners of Friday’s matches will face off on Saturday for a berth in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The other two teams will also face each other on Saturday in the consolation match.
