CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The Virginia men’s tennis team (2-0, 1-0 ACC) will compete in ITA Kickoff Weekend matches on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 26-27, at the Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas.

Live scoring and live video will be available for the matches through links posted on VirginiaSports.com.

ITA Kick-Off Weekend consists of 15 regionals with four teams competing in each regional across the country. The winners of the single-elimination event advance to next month’s ITA Division I National Team Indoor Championships, being held Feb. 15-18 in Chicago, Ill. Illinois will serve as hosts for the National Team Indoors and received automatic invitation to the championship, and is exempt from competing in the Kick-Off Weekend.

No. 16 Virginia (2-0), will open play on Saturday, January 27, taking on California (0-1) at noon Eastern Time. The host team, No. 9 Texas A&M (1-0), will face Western Michigan (2-1) in the second match of the day. The two winning teams will face one another at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday following a 12 p.m. consolation match.

Virginia opened up its dual season last weekend with a pair of victories. The Cavaliers opened the season with a 6-1 victory over William & Mary and followed with a 4-1 victory over Louisville to kick off conference play. Junior Carl Soderlund (Stockholm, Sweden) went 2-0 at No. 1 singles to open the season. The Cavaliers did not drop a doubles match in the two contests.

Virginia is 4-0 all-time against Cal. The last meeting between the two was in the 2016 NCAA semifinals when the Cavaliers downed the Bears, 4-0, en route to winning their third NCAA title. Cal dropped its season-opener to Florida State last week, falling 4-3 to the Seminoles in a match at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona, Florida.

Virginia is 5-0 against Texas A&M. The last meeting between the two teams was a 4-0 victory by the Cavaliers in the quarterfinals of the 2015 NCAA Championship, en route to winning their second NCAA title. Virginia has played in College Station at the 2005 and 2009 NCAA Championships as well as a regular-season dual match in 2013. The Aggies have only played one dual match this season, a 7-0 victory over Abilene Christian, but started the spring season by competing at the 2019 Sherwood Collegiate Cup at the Sherwood Country Club in Los Angeles. Valentin Vacherot won the singles consolation title, going 4-1 in the tournament with three wins over ranked players, and Barnaby Smoth and Noah Schachter were the runners-up in the doubles draw.

This would be the first meeting between Virginia and Western Michigan. Western Michigan played UIC twice in a season-opening doubleheader, twice downing the Flames by a 7-0 score. The Broncos fell to Iowa, 6-1, in their last match.

The Cavaliers have won six ITA National Team Indoor Championships, including four-straight from 2008 to 2011 and most recently in 2017 when the tournament was held in Charlottesville. Virginia has only failed to advance out of ITA Kickoff Weekend once in the 10-year history of the format.
