Laviano Takes Home ACC Offensive Player of the Week Honors
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia men’s lacrosse player Ian Laviano was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the Atlantic Coast Conference for games played through March 17.
Laviano (So., Laurel Hallow, N.Y.) scored a game-high five goals on seven shots in UVA’s 13-11 win over No. 7 Notre Dame. The win snapped UVA’s seven-game losing streak to the Irish. With UVA trailing 10-5 in the third quarter, the Cavaliers finished the game on an 8-1 run to pick up the victory. Laviano scored three times during the streak, including starting the run at 7:27 in the third. His fifth and final score of the game put UVA up for good with 6:26 left in the game. Laviano also picked up four ground balls, aiding the Cavaliers’ riding game as Notre Dame failed four clears. The Irish entered the game No. 3 in the nation in clearing efficiency. Laviano also picked up a key ground ball on a UVA clear that was almost forced by Notre Dame late in the fourth quarter.
Laviano was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season and for the third time in his career. He also was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week on Feb. 25.
Virginia returns to action on Sat., March 23 at No. 17 Johns Hopkins in the annual battle for the Doyle Smith Cup. Faceoff is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
