CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia senior Hilmar Jonsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) captured his second ACC Outdoor Field Performer of the Week honor for the 2019 season, the league office announced on Wednesday (May 1).

With the last throw at the Virginia Grand Prix on Saturday (April 27), Jonsson set an Icelandic, Lannigan Field and UVA hammer throw record. He recorded a mark of 75.26m (246-11) with his last attempt to capture the second-best throw in the NCAA and 13th-best throw in the world this season.

Jonsson’s throw topped the decade old Icelandic national record of 74.48m (244-4) set in 2008. His mark also set a Lannigan Field record and shattered his prior school record mark of 73.13m (239-11) in the event. During the series, Jonsson recorded five throws that topped his previous career-best in the hammer.

Jonsson and the Cavaliers will return to action on May 9 for the three-day ACC Championships. The conference championships will be held at Virginia’s home facility, Lannigan Field.
