QUEENS, NY – Two Virginia men’s tennis team alumni, Thai-Son Kwiatkowski and JC Aragone, competed at the US Open Qualifying Tournament, the anchor event of US Open Fan Week, which runs August 19-23 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Kwiatkowski, who is currently ranked No. 204 in the world, earned his spot in qualifying by his ranking. Aragone, currently ranked No. 282, was awarded one of nine wild card into the qualifying tournament. Both players also competed in qualifying last year.

Kwiatkowski faced the No. 9 seed and World No. 109 Mikel Ymer on Monday in the first match of the day on Court 17. Kwaitkowski was edged in a third-set tiebreaker, falling 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(2).

Aragone took on the No. 3 seed, World No. 92 Soonwoo Kwon in the opening round, rallying for a 6-1 victory in the second set after dropping his first set, 6-4. However, Kwon won the decider 6-4 to advance to the second round.

Kwiatkowski and Aragone were trying to earn a spot in the main draw of the tournament for the second time in their careers. Both competed in singles at the 2017 US Open with Kwiatkowski receiving a spot in the main draw as the 2017 NCAA Singles Champion while Aragone advanced through qualifying.
