Virginia Hosts Cavalier Classic Tournament Saturday and Sunday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia hosts the Cavalier Classic, presented by DoubleTree by Hilton Charlottesville, on Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 30 – Dec. 1) at John Paul Jones Arena.
 
The Virginia women’s basketball team (3-3) plays James Madison (5-1) on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. and No. 11 UCLA (5-0) on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 3:30 p.m.
 
On Saturday, UCLA will take on UCF (4-2) in the second game of the day, tipping at approximately 4:30 p.m. On Sunday, UCF will face JMU with tip time set for 1 p.m.
 
BROADCAST INFORMATION

  • Virginia’s games against JMU and UCLA will stream as an ACCNX contest, available on the ESPN app and WatchESPN. ACCNX streams are available through participating TV providers that carry ACCN
  • All of the 2019-20 Virginia women’s basketball games – home and away – are available locally on the radio on NewsRadio 1070 AM and 98.9 FM WINA

NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • Kylie Kornegay-Lucas was named the ACC Freshman of the Week on Nov. 25
  • Kornegay-Lucas carried Virginia to a 56-53 overtime victory against Old Dominion, logging her first career double-double with 31 points and 12 rebounds  In addition to making 10 of Virginia’s 19 field goals and going 10-of-11 from the free throw line, she also stole an inbounds pass with 3.0 seconds remaining in overtime of a then two-point game to wrap up the victory for the Cavaliers
  • This was the first ACC Freshman of the Week honor for a Cavalier since Dominique Toussaint earned the accolade on Feb. 6, 2017
  • Prior to this season, the last time a Cavalier scored 30 points in a game was (now assistant coach) Monica Wright’s 34-point game in the NCAA Tournament against Green Bay on March 21, 2010. This season, two Cavaliers have joined UVA’s 30-point Club, Jocelyn Willoughby in the season-opener against Bucknell and Kornegay-Lucas on Sunday against ODU
  • Kornegay-Lucas’ 31-point game against Old Dominion makes her just the second-ever UVA freshman to have a 30-point game. The last freshman to do so was Dawn Staley, who did it twice, putting up 37 against Wake Forest and 34 against Maryland in her rookie campaign, but both of those games came in her second semester. Kornegay-Lucas’ 30-point performance was in her sixth collegiate game
  • Kornegay-Lucas is also the first player in program history to come off the bench to score 30 points in a game
  • After shooting a season-best 80.0 percent from the free throw line against Old Dominion (16-of-20), Virginia has moved up to second in the ACC in free throw shooting percentage at 75.0 percent
  • Willoughby ranks second among ACC players in free throw shooting, making 89.2 percent of her attempts. She had a streak of 25-straight made free throws snapped in the first quarter of the UConn game
  • Willoughby leads the ACC in minutes played (36.0 per game)
  • Willoughby is ninth in the conference in points per game (16.2) and 12th in rebounding (8.0)
  • Sunday’s game against No. 11 UCLA will be the Cavaliers’ third game against a ranked opponent in a five-game span after playing back-to-back games against No. 13 Kentucky and No. 4 UConn

 
LAST TIME OUT

  • UVA downed Old Dominion, 56-53, in overtime on Sunday
  • Freshman guard Kylie Kornegay-Lucas had a breakout performance, scoring 31 points, going 10-of-18 from the field and 10-of-11 from the free throw line. Lucas also logged her first career double-double by grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds. Old Dominion’s Victoria Morris scored 26 points, going 8-of-18 from three-point range
  • Old Dominion led by 11 points in the third quarter and held a five-point lead heading into the final minute of play, but the Cavaliers battled back, with Jocelyn Willoughby hitting a game-tying three with 10.8 seconds remaining in regulation. In overtime, Virginia held a 54-50 lead with 11 seconds remaining, but a three-pointer from Morris cut the lead to one. After an immediate foul, Virginia made one of two free throws to go up 55-53, before Kornegay-Lucas stole the ensuing inbound pass with 3.0 seconds remaining to give possession back to UVA and seal the victory

 
SCOUTING CAVALIER CLASSIC OPPONENTS – JMU

  • JMU is receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll
  • James Madison is 5-1 this season with its only setback being a two-point loss to No. 8 Maryland, 70-68
  • Senior guard Kamiah Smalls has been named the Colonial Athletics Association Player of the Week each of the last two weeks
  • Smalls led the way for JMU this week averaging 18.5 points per game over the 2-0 week. At Georgetown, she dropped 21 points for her fourth 20-plus point performance of the season. She then added 16 in the win over Liberty
  • The Dukes were the unanimous  selection to win the CAA in the preseason coaches poll with Smalls repeating as CAA preseason player of the year
  • Virginia leads the all-time series, 15-9, but has lost three of the last four meetings

 
SCOUTING CAVALIER CLASSIC OPPONENTS – UCLA

  • UCLA is 5-0 this season after defeating Yale on Tuesday night at Pauley Pavilion
  • In 2018-19, Cori Close led UCLA to its fourth-straight 20-win season and fourth-straight trip to the Sweet 16. UCLA joins a list of eight teams in the NCAA that have made the Sweet 16 each of the past four seasons (Baylor, Mississippi State, Notre Dame, Oregon State, South Carolina, Stanford, UConn)
  • UCLA returns three starters from a year ago, including 2019 All-Pac-12 selection Michaela Onyenwere, who led the team in scoring with 18.3 points per game and became the fourth Bruin in program history to score 600 or more points in a single season
  • UCLA also brings back floor general Japreece Dean, who averaged 14.1 points, 4.9 assists and shot 92.2 percent (107-for-116) from the charity stripe, setting a UCLA single-season record for free throw percentage
  • The Bruins won 13 of their last 17 games in 2018-19 to finish 22-13 overall
  • Virginia has won both meetings between the two teams, both times by a 22-point margin. This is the first time the two teams are playing since 1995

 
SCOUTING CAVALIER CLASSIC Participant – UCF

  • UCF opened its season with a 74-58 victory over Pitt
  • UCF is in its fourth season under head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson. In her previous three seasons at the helm, Coach “ABE” has led the Knights to three consecutive postseasons. Guiding the Black and Gold to its first at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament in school history, her 2018-19 squad posted a program-record 26 victories while finishing as the runner-up in The American for the first time in league history
  • The Knights begin their season in the receiving votes category of the USA Today/WBCA Preseason Top 25 for the second straight year. UCF received votes in one or both national polls every week last season, and entered the postseason ranked 15 in the RPI

 
ON THE HORIZON

  • Virginia will go on the road to take on Rutgers (4-1) on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 6pm in the B1G/ACC Challenge, before breaking for exams
  • The Cavalier Classic tournament games are Virginia’s final home games until January 2
