CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The No. 10 Virginia men’s tennis team (2-0, 0-0 ACC) plays at Louisville (2-0, 0-0 ACC) on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 12 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center in Louisville, Ky.

  • The Cavaliers begin the season ranked No. 10 in the Oracle/ITA Division I Men’s Tennis Team preseason rankings
  • The Cavaliers opened the season with a pair of 7-0 sweeps over Furman and Washington and Lee on Wednesday at the Boar’s Head Sports Club
  • Sophomore Ryan Goetz (Greenlawn, N.Y.) clinched both matches for the Cavaliers, including picking up a straight-set win at No. 1 singles against Washington and Lee
  • Senior Ammar Alhaqbani (Alexandria, Va.) also picked up a pair of singles wins on Wednesday, improving his singles record to a team-best 13-2
  • Virginia has two players ranked in singles: junior Gianni Ross (Chicago, Ill.) at No. 68 and Goetz at No. 115. Senior Carl Soderlund (Stockholm, Sweden) was ranked No. 1 in the preseason rankings, but did not compete in collegiate tournaments in the fall and is currently not ranked
  • Ross and sophomore William Woodall (Washington, D.C.) are ranked No. 53 in doubles. The duo went 7-0 last season and picked up a win on Wednesday in the match against Furman and were leading 5-2 against Washington and Lee when their match was abandoned


  • Louisville opened its spring season last Sunday, picking up a pair of 7-0 wins over Dayton and Bellarmine
  • The Cardinals posted a 16-13 overall record in 2019 and reached as high as No. 47 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association team rankings. Louisville returns eight players and welcomes five newcomers
  • Among the Cardinals’ returners is Fabien Salle who led the 2019 team in overall singles wins (22) and doubles victories (21) along with fellow sophomore Sergio Hernandez who registered a team-best 17 dual matches wins in singles
  • Junior college transfer Tin Chen led the Cardinals with a 15-3 singles record in the fall
  • Virginia is 9-1 all time against the Cardinals with its only loss coming in 2018


  • The Cavaliers are back at the Boar’s Head next Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 25-26), hosting ITA Kickoff Weekend matches when Memphis, NC State, Utah State and Virginia will be vying for an invitation to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Matches are at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. both days
  • Virginia will take on Memphis in the 1 p.m. match on Saturday and then either NC State or Utah State on Sunday
