CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia women’s tennis freshman Natasha Subhash (Fairfax, Va.) has been named the ACC Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week it was announced by the league office on Tuesday (March 3). 

Subhash went 2-0 in singles on the week, picking up wins over No. 5 Alexa Graham of North Carolina and No. 16 Alana Smith of NC State in the Cavaliers’ two matches. She defeated the Tar Heel senior 6-1, 6-2 on Friday before rallying for a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win over Smith in Virginia’s win over the third-ranked Wolfpack.

Subhash and doubles partner Sofia Munera (Pereira, Colombia) clinched the doubles point for the Cavaliers for the first point in the 4-3 victory over the Wolfpack. The Virginia freshman then clinched the match with her win at the top of the lineup over NC State’s Smith. 

The win was the first over a top-five opponent for Virginia since the 2016 NCAA Tournament when the Cavaliers defeated then No. 3 North Carolina in the Sweet 16. It is only the fifth time in program history that the Cavaliers have defeated a top-five opponent 
 
Virginia will return to action this weekend, hosting No. 23 Syracuse and No. 4 Florida State in a pair of matches. The Cavaliers will face the Orange at 2 p.m. on Friday (March 6) before hosting the Seminoles at 1 p.m. on Sunday (March 8). Both matches are set to be played at the Snyder Tennis Center.
