CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Senior Jordan Scott (Portmore, Jamaica) was named the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Field Athlete of Year, while freshman Derek Pekar (Ventura, Calif.) was named the VaSID Field Rookie of the Year the organization announced on Monday (April 13) with the release of its inaugural Track and Field All-State team. The Cavaliers also had 11 honorees selected for the VaSID All-State team for their performance throughout the season.

Scott’s dominant season in the triple jump earned him the title of U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Southeast Field Athlete of the Year, ACC Field Athlete of the Meet and ACC Field Athlete of the Year. The UVA jumper captured his third ACC indoor triple jump title, becoming just the fifth conference athlete to win the event three or more times. Scott has held the NCAA’s leading mark in the event since he opened the indoor season in February. His season-best jump of 17.02m (55’10.25′) set an ACC and UVA record and was the 17th-best jump in NCAA indoor history. Scott also competed in the long jump at the ACC Championships. He earned All-ACC second-team honors with a fifth-place finish and a mark of 7.56m (24’9.75″) at the conference meet.

Pekar won an ACC title at his first conference championship, finishing first in the heptathlon. The freshman placed in the top two in four of seven events and scored 5,362 points. His score from the ACC Championships was the 10th best by a freshman in the NCAA this season and ranks second all-time in UVA history. Pekar also competed in the pole vault at the ACC Championships, clearing a height of 4.58m (15’0.25″) to place 13th in the event. Pekar is only the second Cavalier to win the ACC title in the heptathlon, joining Jack Lint who won the title in 2017.

Virginia also won eight first-team VaSID All-State honors and three second-team selections. AJ Ernst (Marblehead, Mass. – middle distance), Ari Klau (West Harford, Conn. – distance), Scott (jumps), Brenton Foster (Townsville, Australia – jumps), Sam Young (Lewes, Del. – jumps), Owayne Owens (Montego Bay, Jamaica – jumps), Pekar (multi) and the distance medley relay were named to the first team. Brandon Outlaw (Moorestown, N.J. – sprints), Jordan Willis (Williamsburg, Va.- sprints) and Rohann Asfaw (Rockville, Md. – distance) earned second-team honors.
