Virginia Plays at Boston College on Sunday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (6-9, 1-3 ACC) travels to play at Boston College (9-6, 2-2 ACC) on Sunday, Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. the Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • Senior guard Jocelyn Willoughby (East Orange, N.J.) continues to lead the ACC in scoring, averaging 19.5 points per game, which ranks 28th in the nation. Louisville’s Dana Evans and Duke’s Haley Gorecki are second at 18.3 points per game. Only one Cavalier, Monica Wright, has ever finished the year as the conference’s leading scorer. She did so in both her junior (2009) and senior (2010) seasons, averaging 20.5 and 23.7 points per game, respectively
  • Willoughby also leads the ACC in free throw shooting percentage at 90.2 percent. She has more makes (92) and more attempts (102) than any other player in the conference
  • Willoughby went 11-of-11 from the line against Duke after going 10-of-10 at NC State. She has made 22 consecutive free throw attempts. It is the second time this season she has made more than 20-straight after putting together a streak of 25-consecutive made free throws in a streak that spanned parts of the first five games of the season
  • Senior guard Dominique Toussaint (Staten Island, N.Y.) has had back-to-back double-digit scoring efforts against NC State and Duke, averaging 14.5 points per game in her last two contests
  • Toussaint has had three or more assists in each of the last eight games. She leads the team with 45 assists this year and has 345 in her career. She is 35 assists shy of moving into the top-10 in program history
  • The Cavaliers had a season-high 16 steals against Duke. It was the most since the squad grabbed 15 against Syracuse in the ACC opener of the 2017-18 season (12/31/17)
  • Freshman guard Shemera Williams (Milwaukee, Wisc.) had nine steals against Duke, one shy of matching the program record for steals in a game. It was the most steals in a game by a Cavalier since Monica Wright had 10 against Liberty on Dec. 29, 2009. No Cavalier has had more than seven steals in a game since Wright that season
  • Virginia outscored the Blue Devils 30-14 in the paint. It was the second time in three games UVA scored 30 or more points down low after scoring 34 against UNC
  • UVA went 5-of-10 from three-point range against Duke, the second time in four games shooting 50.0 percent from long range

 
SCOUTING BOSTON COLLEGE

  • Boston College leads the ACC in scoring, averaging 78.5 points per game
  • BC is coming off of back-to-back road wins at Pitt (79-70) and at Notre Dame (75-65) and has won four of its last five games
  • The Eagles have four players averaging double figures in scoring, led by Taylor Soule with 12.7 points per game and a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game
  • Virginia leads the all-time series, 16-5, and has won the last seven meetings including a 77-61 victory in the first round of the 2019 ACC Tournament. BC’s last win was a 69-65 victory at home in 2014

 
ON THE HORIZON

  • Virginia has back-to-back road games, playing at Boston College (8-6, 1-2 ACC) on Sunday, Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. before playing at Wake Forest (9-5, 2-1 ACC) on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.
  • The Wake Forest game will stream on ACCNX
  • Virginia returns home on Sunday, Jan. 19 to host Virginia Tech in a Commonwealth Clash game at 3 p.m.
  • The January 19th game is also the celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. There will be a pregame sports festival on the upper concourse of JPJ beginning at 1:30. The festival will include sports stations for youth eighth grade and under to visit. Those completing all of the sports stations will receive a complimentary t-shirt. There will also be face painting, balloon artist, pop-a-shot, Plinko and a chance to meet Virginia student-athletes. Doors to the arena open at 1:30, 30 minutes earlier than normal. The sports festival is free with admission to the game
