CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  Virginia swimmers Kate Douglass (Pelham, N.Y.) and Matt Brownstead (Port Matilda, Penn.) were named the ACC Swimmers of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday (Nov. 3).

Douglass led the No. 1 Virginia women’s swimming and diving team to a 188-104 victory against Navy in the team’s season opener. The UVA sophomore won four events, setting a Lejeune Hall record in two with a time of 48.26 in the 100-yard freestyle and a time of 1:38.35 in the 200-yard medley relay. She also topped the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley going 22.43 and 1:55.27, respectively. Douglass holds the NCAA’s fastest time this season in the 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley, and ranks third in the 50-yard freestyle.

In his collegiate debut, Brownstead recorded a pair of individual wins and a relay win to help the No. 13 Cavaliers defeat the Midshipmen 181-117. Brownstead swam a time of 20.12 in the 50-yard freestyle and a time of 44.24 in the 100-yard freestyle to win both events. His leadoff time of 44.45 in the 400-yard freestyle relay helped the team secure first place, while his freestyle split time of 19.60 in the 200-yard medley relay helped his relay quartet place third. Brownstead ranks ninth nationally in the 50-yard freestyle and 10th in the 100-yard freestyle.

Members of the Virginia men’s and women’s swimming teams will head to Richmond, Va., on Nov. 12 to compete at the three-day Toyota U.S. Open.
