CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Emma Navarro (Charleston, S.C.) of the 10th-ranked Virginia women’s tennis team has been named ACC Co-Freshman of the Week by the conference office, it was announced on Tuesday (Jan. 26).

Navarro made her collegiate debut over the weekend, competing at the top of the lineup in singles for the Cavaliers at the ITA Kickoff Weekend regional at Ohio State. She went 2-0 in singles in matches against Tennessee and No. 13 Ohio State.

In her first collegiate match, Navarro claimed a three-set victory over No. 118 Carly Briggs of Tennessee. After the Lady Vol fought back to force a third set, Navarro claimed victory with a 20-minute third set as she won 6-4, 5-7, 6-0. In the second match of the weekend, she got the Cavaliers on the board in the championship round against the hosting Buckeyes, winning 6-3, 6-4 over Kolie Allen.

Virginia will return to action on Thursday (Jan. 28) when the Cavaliers welcome VCU for a 3 p.m. match at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. It is the first home match of the season for the Cavaliers and is not open to the public.
