CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming teams finished the first day of the 2021 Cavalier Invitational with six event wins on Friday evening at the Aquatic & Fitness Center.

WOMEN’S MEET

Junior Carter Bristow (Richmond, Va.) was first in the women’s 500-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 5:00.35 in the finals after a prelim time of 4:59.60. Junior Julia Menkhaus (Charlotte, N.C.) dropped her season-best time in the event to a 4:50.90 and sophomore Ella Collins (Austin, Texas) improved her time to 4:56.64 in the event’s prelims.

Virginia’s women claimed the top four spots in the 50-yard free. Junior Alexis Wenger (Detroit, Mich.) was first in 22.92, senior Kyla Valls (Miami, Fla.) was second in 22.92, junior Jessica Nava (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) was third in 23.12 and sophomore Katie Cronin (Gainesville, Fla.) clocked fourth in 23.48.

MEN’S MEET

The men’s group of freshman Matt Brownstead (Port Matilda, Pa.), freshman Will Cole (Prospect, Ky.), junior Justin Grender (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore August Lamb (Charlottesville, Va.) took the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:17.90.

Sophomore Jack Wright (Wexford, Pa.) took the win in the men’s 500-yard free with a time of 4:22.78. Sophomore Jack Walker (Charlotte, N.C.) clocked in second in 4:23.93 and freshman Tanner Hering (Greensboro, N.C.) rounded out the top-three in 4:24.02.

Senior Sam Schilling (Excelsior, Minn.) took the 200-yard individual medley in 1:46.40 and freshman Jack Moore (Ashburn, Va.) was second with a time of 1:47.10.

UVA claimed the top-two spots in the men’s 50-yard free, with sophomore Henry Schutte (Grand Rapids, Mich.) winning in 20.48 and junior Nico Ferrara (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) took second in 20.53, after setting his season-best mark of 20.46 in the prelims.

The Cavaliers will be back in action tomorrow for day two of the Cavalier Invitational. Prelims begin at 11 a.m. and finals start at 6 p.m. at the Aquatic & Fitness Center.
