CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia thrower Claudio Romero (Santiago, Chile) is this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Field Performer of the Week as announced Wednesday (March 31) by the conference.

Romero’s winning discus throw of 61.50 meters (201-9) at the Raleigh Relays set a Virginia program freshman record and stands as the third-best in program history and ranks No. 2 nationally this season.

Romero won the discus competition and his mark was the top discus throw in the nation during last weekend’s competition. He had another throw of 60.08m during the Raleigh Relays that was the third-longest of any discus thrower in the nation last week. Romero has won back-to-back discus competitions to open the 2021 season.

Romero is the second Cavalier honored this season. Last week, Michaela Meyer was named the Women’s Track Performer of the Week (March 24) after picking up a pair of wins in the 800 meters and 1500 meters at the UVA Opener.

The Cavaliers compete at home at Lannigan Field this weekend. The Virginia Invitational runs Friday-Saturday with a total of nine teams competing.
