CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – For the third time this season, Virginia freshman thrower Claudio Romero (Santiago, Chile) has been honored by the Atlantic Coast Conference as its Men’s Field Performer of the Week. This week he shares the award with Pittsburgh’s Felix Wolter, who won the decathlon at the Virginia Challenge.

At last weekend’s Virginia Challenge, Romero won the discus by bettering the UVA school record in the event twice. On his third attempt, Romero registered a toss of 63.86 meters (209’ 6”) to set the record. On his sixth and final throw his discus landed at 64.39 meters (211’ 3”) to establish a new UVA standard. That mark was six feet better than his previous best throw this season heading into the competition.

Romero’s distance stands as the No. 2 mark in the nation this season, is tops for all ACC competitors and for all freshmen.

He has won three of the four discus events he has entered this season and been the top collegiate finisher in all four competitions. Previously, Romero was honored by the ACC after the Virginia Challenge and the Raleigh Relays.

The Cavaliers return to action May 1 when they host the Virginia Grand Prix at Lannigan Field.
