Four Cavaliers Earn Invitations to the NCAA Individual Championships
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –Virginia women’s tennis sophomore Natasha Subhash (Fairfax, Va.) and freshman Emma Navarro (Charleston, S.C.) have been selected to compete in both the 2021 NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships, being held May 23-28 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 17-22.
Senior Rosie Johanson (Vancouver, Canada) will partner with Navarro in doubles and junior Sofia Munera (Pereira, Colombia) will play with Subhash.
Navarro will be the No. 3 seed in the 64-player women’s singles draw with Subhash earning a 9-16 designation. Both of the doubles teams are unseeded in the 32-team championship.
Johanson previously earned invitations to both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in her sophomore season (2018). Munera earned a spot in the 2019 NCAA Doubles Championship as a freshman. This will be the first trip to the individual championships for Subhash as the tournaments were not held last season.
Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for eligible/entered singles players. For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA Top 125 eligible/entered singles players, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student-athlete is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All singles players must have results for a minimum of six matches in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
Automatic qualification into the Division I doubles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible doubles teams ranked in the ITA Top 60 for eligible/entered doubles teams. For conferences with more than one doubles team within the ITA Top 60 eligible/entered doubles teams, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which doubles team is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All doubles teams must have completed a minimum of four matches in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
Match-ups and the complete singles and doubles brackets will be announced the day before the start of the tournament.
