NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Virginia senior Rohann Asfaw placed 13th to repeat as an All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection at the 2021 Cross Country Championships. The Cavalier men finished eighth and the UVA women were 10th in the competition that took place at Notre Dame’s Burke Cross Country Course.

Asfaw methodically worked his way through the pack after being in 46th place after the first 2,000 meters of the 8k competition. By the 4.8k split he was in 20th place and stood 10th entering the final 2,000 meters. Asfaw was fourth at the 2020 event.

The second-best finish for the UVA men was 40th place by junior Jacob Hunter with a time of 24:32.0. Senior Derek Johnson crossed the finish line 49th at 24:37.4, sophomore Wes Porter was 55th at 24:44.7 and senior Peter Morris was 63rd (24:49.8) to round out UVA’s scoring.

Virginia’a women’s team was led by freshman Margot Appleton who finished 31st overall with a time of 21:05.8 on the 6,000-meter course. Fellow first-year Mia Barnett was 46th at 21:18.0. Senior Gabby Karas was 56th at 21:32.8, graduate student Michaela Meyer was 81st at 22:08.9 and sophomore Ellie Desmond rounded out UVA’s scoring in 84th position (22:16.7).

Notre Dame won the men’s competition while NC State claimed its sixth straight title at the women’s race.

The NCAA Southeast Regional Championships will take place Nov. 12 in Lexington, Ky.
