Three Cavaliers Compete At Patriot Open Sunday
FAIRFAX, Va. – Three members of the Virginia wrestling team hit the road on Sunday (Dec. 5) to compete at the Patriot Open hosted by George Mason. Channing Connors, Scott Kiyono and Justin Phillips all hit the mat for the Cavaliers in competition at the event.
At 141 pounds, Kiyono went 2-2 on the day, posting a win by pin and a decision, before ending his day in a tight battle in the first consolation round of eight when Michael Cetta of Rutgers rallied late in the third period to grab the victory.
At 174 pounds, Phillips posted a 3-2 mark on the day, posting a pair of bonus-point wins with a tech fall and a major decision before ending his day with a loss by technical fall to Logan Messer of George Mason in the second round of eight in the consolation bracket.
At 197 pounds, Connors earned a first-round bye and then went 1-2 on the day, dropping a tight contest in the round of 16 before grinding out a decision in the first consolation round of eight. He ended his day when he was pinned by Jaxon Smith of Maryland in the second consolation round of eight.
UP NEXT FOR THE HOOS
Virginia will return to action as a team when the Cavaliers travel to compete at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championship hosted by Northwestern. The two-day event begins on Dec. 29 and will be held at NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill.
