CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  The No. 9 Virginia women’s tennis (3-0) hosts ITA Kickoff Weekend matches at the Boar’s Head Sports Club this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 28-29.

ITA KICKOFF WEEKEND SCHEDULE

  • Friday, Jan. 28, 3 p.m.: 1-seed Virginia (3-0) vs. 4-seed JMU (1-0)
  • Friday, Jan. 28, 6 p.m.: 2-seed Stanford (1-0) vs 3-seed Arkansas (3-0)
  • Saturday, Jan. 29, 3:30 p.m. – women’s championship match
  • Saturday, Jan. 29, 6:30 p.m. – women’s consolation

ABOUT ITA KICKOFF WEEKEND

  • For 120 Division I tennis teams, the Road to Indoors begins Friday as they take part in the 14th annual ITA Kickoff Weekend. Hosted by 15 men’s and women’s programs from around the country, 120 teams will be playing for a spot in the 2022 ITA National Team Indoor Championships
  • Returning to the traditional 60 team format, the 15 host sites on both the men’s and women’s sides were determined by the 2021 year-end rankings, while the remaining teams selected their Kickoff Weekend site through the ITA Kickoff Weekend Draft
  • ITA Kickoff Weekend Scoreboard
  • The winner of the Charlottesville regional will earn a spot in the 35th Annual ITA National Team Indoor Championships, being held Feb. 11-14 in Madison, Wisc.
  • The UVA men are also hosting ITA Kickoff Weekend matches and will be playing the preliminary round before the women’s matches on Saturday

  • The Cavaliers have opened the season with three sweeps, winning 7-0 against Marshall, Longwood and Richmond
  • Both freshman Elaine Chervinsky and junior Natasha Subhash come into the weekend with 12 singles victories
  • Amber O’Dell and Emma Navarro are 3-0 at No. 1 Doubles

  • Stanford remained No. 16 in this week’s ITA Collegiate Tennis Coaches Poll
  • The Cardinal have two players ranked in the top-25 in singles: No. 9 Connie Ma and No. 21 Alexandra Yepifanova
  • Yepifanova won the consolation singles bracket at the ITA Fall National Championships. Her run included a straight-set victory against Subhash
  • Arkansas was ranked No. 36 in last year’s final team rankings, making their first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 2015
  • Indianna Spink finished the year ranked No. 38 in singles, being named the SEC Freshman of the Year and garnering a spot in the NCAA Singles Championship
  • This is James Madison’s first time playing in ITA Kickoff Weekend matches
  • JMU won the CAA title last season and earned a spot in the field of the NCAA Championship, competing at the Charlottesville Regional
  • JMU swept the CAA women’s tennis weekly awards as Natalia Nikolopoulou was named the Player of the Week and Michelle Los Arcos and Daniela Voloh were named the doubles team of the week
