CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia’s men’s and women’s track and field teams are set to compete in three events at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama on Friday (March 11) and Saturday (March 12). Owayne Owens will compete in the triple jump, Mia Barnett will compete in the mile, and Virginia’s women’s distance medley relay is entered in the competition.

Owens leaped to new heights this season with a personal-best mark in the triple jump of 16.60m (54’5.5”) at the Tiger Paw Invite (Feb. 11-12). The native of Montego Bay, Jamaica captured his second consecutive ACC Indoor title in the triple jump this season at the ACC Indoor Championships (Feb. 24-26). Owens enters the competition as the fourth seed. Owens has earned All-American honors in the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Barnett enters the competition after a historic season for the Hoos. The freshman distance runner set a Virginia freshman-record in her first attempt at the mile run this season. She went on to improve the record with each attempt before setting her season-best at 4:35.09 at the Valentine Invitational in Boston, Massachusetts. Barnett enters the competition as the 15th seed.

The Virginia women qualify for the distance medley relay after a quartet of Barnett, Anzhelika Parenchuk, Keara Seasholtz and Margot Appleton turned in the team’s season-best performance when they won silver at the ACC Indoor Championships. The team’s time of 10:56.84 stands as a school record and earns the Cavaliers the fourth seed in Birmingham.
