CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Margot Appleton of the Virginia women’s cross country program was named the first ACC Women’s Performer of the Week for the 2022 season after securing a win at the Spider Alumni Open, the league office announced Tuesday (Sept. 6).

After a standout freshman campaign in 2021, Appleton led from wire to wire in her first action of 2022, fending off Georgetown’s Grace Jenson by one-tenth of a second in a dead heat finish to capture the Richmond Spider Alumni Open 4K with a time of 13:23.4.  Appleton led a strong Cavalier pack effort that keyed Virginia to a first-place finish in a 15-team field that included the 17th-ranked Hoyas.

The Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams will be back in action on Friday, September 16 when the Cavaliers will host the Virginia Invitational at Panorama Farms. The men’s 6k is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. The women will begin their 5k loop at 10:15 a.m.
