CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  Virginia women’s tennis graduate student Julia Adams won the singles title at the 2022 ITA Atlantic Regional Championships on Monday (Oct. 24) at the Virginia Tennis Facility at the Boar’s Head Resort.

The tournament was being held in Blacksburg, Va., but when four Cavaliers advanced to Monday’s semifinals, the location for the final two rounds of the tournament was changed to Charlottesville.

Adams defeated sophomore Elaine Chervinsky 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in the final to win her first regional championship. Chervinsky was a singles finalist in last year’s championship as well.

As regional champion and finalist, Adams and Chervinsky earn invitations to compete at the 2022 ITA National Fall Championships, being held Nov. 2-6 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.

Chervinsky downed senior Natasha Subhash 6-2, 6-1 on Monday morning to advance to the final. Adams topped junior Sara Ziodato 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 to advance to the final.

The tournament began on Thursday (Oct. 20) with two rounds of qualifying singles. The main draws of the singles and doubles championships began on Friday with 64 doubles teams and 64 singles players. Subhash and Chervinsky and Ziodato and Meggie Navarro advanced to the Round of 16 in doubles. Adams and Melodie Collard fell in the second round.

Collard played in the singles main draw, falling in the Round of 16. Navarro competed in the singles qualifying tournament, advancing to the qualifying final.

This is the fifth time a Virginia player has won the singles title. Subhash has won the last two regional titles (2019 and 2021).
