CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The United Soccer Coaches announced Tuesday (Dec. 5) that Virginia captains Andreas Ueland and Leo Afonso have each been named All-Region selections after impressive seasons that saw the Cavaliers earn a top-four national seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Ueland was named a first team all-region selection while Afonso landed a spot on the second team.

Ueland earns All-Region honors for the first time in his Virginia career on the heels of a season in which he was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and a first team All-ACC selection. Ueland started all 19 games for the Cavaliers in 2022 as the team posted eight total shutouts. Ueland often came through for the Cavaliers in the biggest moments including a game-saving sliding tackle against No. 3 Syracuse as well as equalizing goals against Virginia Tech and Syracuse.

Afonso also lands All-Region honors for the first time in his career. As a first team All-ACC selection, Afonso led the team in total points (18), goals (7) and tied for the team lead with four assists. The striker recorded four game-winning goals including strikes against No. 3 Syracuse and No. 25 Wake Forest. The Cavaliers went 6-0-1 in games in which Afonso tallied a goal and 10-0-1 when Afonso scored or assisted in 2022.
