Virginia Drops Contest With No. 7 NC State
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia wrestling team (6-5, 0-3 ACC) fell to No. 7 NC State (12-1, 2-1 ACC) by a score of 34-4 at Mem Gym on Friday night (Feb. 3).
HOW IT HAPPENED
With the match starting at 141 pounds, the Wolfpack got out to the quick start with victories in three straight weight classes before Justin McCoy would get the Hoos on the board with a bonus-point victory at 165 pounds. McCoy picked up the 8-0 major decision over Derek Fields, pulling away with a four-point near fall in the second period before locking things down in the third.
NC State would then win the final six weight classes to take the dual victory.

“We had lots of good, but also a lot of bad tonight. This season has been up and down and that’s what we saw tonight. The good stuff was (Justin) McCoy back healthy finally and wrestling like himself again. He looked great. (Michael) Battista went toe-to-toe with one of the best wrestlers in the nation at his weight class and was right there late. (Brian) Courtney always brings the fight, as does Jake Keating.
“We beat ourselves at some weight classes, getting hit with big moves and that’s hard to come back from. The fight was there for the most part, but we made some costly errors and you can’t do that with a team like that. They are solid everywhere. Credit to their staff and athletes. They are a tough out for anyone.”

Virginia returns to the mat on Saturday (Feb. 4) when the Cavaliers host American in a 1 p.m. dual at Memorial Gym. Admission is free to the public.
