CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia wrestling team will close out 2023 at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern. The two-day event begins at 10:30 a.m. ET on Friday (Dec. 29) at NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

Virginia has 13 wrestlers competing in the event.

The Midlands Championship will be streamed on B1G+ for a subscription fee with a main broadcast stream and then individual mat streams. Live results are also provided by TrackWrestling. VIRGINIA WRESTLERS IN THE RANKINGS
The Cavaliers will send five ranked wrestlers out on the mat when the team competes at the Midlands Championships this weekend. Justin McCoy (174) leads the squad with a rankings of seventh at his weight class. Marlon Yarbrough (133) is ranked No. 20 at his weight class, while Jack Gioffre (141) and Michael Gioffre (149) are ranked No. 20 and No. 33, respectively. Dylan Cedeno (157) rounds out the ranked wrestlers at No. 31.

VIRGINIA AT THE MIDLANDS CHAMPIONSHIP

  • The Cavaliers first competed at the Midlands Championship in the 2019 season and are making the program’s third appearance at the event which is in its 59th season
  • Last season, three Cavaliers placed with Neil Antrassian (3rd – 184), Justin McCoy (5th – 165) and Michael Battista (6th – 197) all ascending the podium
  • Brian Courtney placed fourth at 149 pounds last season in an unattached capacity before rejoining the roster after having graduated a year earlier.
  • The Hoos also had three placewinners in the 2019 season with Jay Aiello (2nd – 197), Louie Hayes (6th – 133) and Vic Marcelli (7th – 174) all claiming a spot on the podium.
  • Virginia was slated to compete in the 2021 Midlands Championship that was canceled due to COVID
