CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Gavin Cagle went 2-1 at the Southern Scuffle presented by Compound Sportswear on Monday (Jan. 1) to stay alive at the two-day event hosted by Chattanooga and advance to the second day of action.

Cagle will continue competition in the fourth round of consolation matches on Tuesday (Jan. 2) with wrestling set to begin at 11 a.m. at McKenzie Arena. The 157-pound wrestler will face Logan Ferrero of Duke in his opening match of the day.

Cagle opened the day against seventh-ranked Daniel Cardenas of Stanford and suffered a loss by pin to the top seed in the weight class before picking up a pair of hard-fought decisions in the wrestlebacks. He first defeated Nick Tattini of Duke 4-2,  before taking an identical 4-2 decision over Blake Saito of Brown.

The back-to-back decisions set up the Tuesday morning showdown with his second Duke opponent of the event.
