Cavaliers Fall In Top-25 Matchup At No. 22 Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 23 Virginia women’s soccer team (10-5-0, 3-5-0 ACC) fell on the road Thursday night (Oct. 17), dropping a 4-0 contest at No. 22 Florida State (9-2-2, 4-2-1 ACC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Seminoles got on the board in the 19th minute, scoring off a corner kick. Ran Iwai served the ball to the back post where Taylor Huff headed it down and into the middle of the goal.

Florida State doubled the lead in the 23rd minute off a penalty kick that was awarded after Victoria Safradin came off her line and clipped the Seminole attacker near the left edge of the 18-yard box as she slid in an attempt to collect the ball. The penalty was upheld upon review and Solai Washington hit the shot to the bottom left. Safradin guessed right and got a hand on the ball but was unable to keep it out of the net.

The third goal came in the 34th minute as the initial attack by Florida State was broken up, but the ball was knocked into the air and not cleared, resulting in a header from Jordynn Dudley back toward Wrianna Hudson inside the six. Hudson volleyed it in for the 3-0 lead.

A long ball ahead from Carissa Boeckmann led to the fourth goal as she found Giana Riley approaching the box. Riley slowed things up as she approached the box with a defender tracking back with her. The Seminole then worked her way to her right, getting around her defender to create space and took a shot that hit the right post and deflected in goal.

NOTES ON THE GAME

  • The penalty kick by Florida State was the first penalty kick taken by a Virginia opponent this season.
  • Following Thursday night’s game, the series record sits at 21-12-8 in favor of the Cavaliers.
  • It marks only the third time in the last 17 meetings that the contest was decided by more than one goal. Four of the last 17 meetings have been draws.

Florida State is a very good team, and they won every phase of this match, and the score reflected that. Full credit to them.”

UP NEXT FOR THE HOOS
Virginia returns home to play its final regular-season home game next Friday (Oct. 25) against Clemson. Kick is set for 7 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium.
