GREENSBORO, N.C. – Cavalier starter Jon Metzger struck out a career-high 10 batters through 4.2 innings, but UNCG batted around in the fifth inning and scored six runs, three on a home run to left field by Mark Oetjen. The Spartans tied the game at 7-7 in the sixth inning when Brandon Weber doubled to left center and then scored on Jeremy Purcell’s single to center field. Jesse Martin scored the go-ahead run in the two-run Spartan seventh on a Chris Cook single to left. UNCG scored its final two runs on the day in the eighth inning.

Virginia scored four of its runs in the fourth innning, hightlighted by a two-run triple by Mike Floyd off Spartan reliever Aaron Horne. The Cavaliers had led 2-0 at that point after Mark Fueffert scored on a fielder’s choice in the second and Jonathan Benick smacked a home run to right field that entered the second level of the Walker Avenue parking deck. He is the first batter to hit the deck in UNCG Baseball Stadium history.

John Thomas took the loss for Virginia and fell to 0-1. Virginia fell to 8-14. The Cavaliers host Duke in a weekend ACC series beginning Friday at 3 pm.
