CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Jamie Howard and Fred Weaver combined tohold the University of Virginia to only one unearned run on five hitshereSunday as the Cavaliers fell to the University of Maryland 5-1 inAtlanticCoast Conference play. With the loss, UVa falls to 17-30 on the year and7-13 in conference play. The Terrapins salvage the final game of thethree-gam series and improve to 18-20-1 and 6-11.

Maryland got on the board first with two runs on two hits in thetop of the third. Ray Gemmill led off the inning with a walk and thenadvanced to third when Eric Beer followed with a double to left-center.Matt Swope then grounded out to score Gemmill and Larry Long followedwithan RBI single to plate Beer.

Virginia cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth on a hitanda Maryland error. Robbie Marvin reached on a error by Casey Trout withoneout in the inning and then stole second. Jon Benick followed with a flyball to right field, and a heads-up Marvin advanced to third when theTerrapins never called for time. That was key, as the next batter,JulianGonzalez, reached on an infield hit that allowed Marvin to score fromthird.

The Terrapins plated another two runs in the sixth on two hitsanda Virginia error. Craig Munroe reached to lead off the inning whenHunterWyant lost an infield pop up in the sun. After a single to left by JasonMohap, Brian Barton doubled down the rightfield line to score bothrunnersand push the Terp lead to 4-1. Maryland added another run in the seventhonan RBI single by Trout.

Meanwhile, Howard (4-2) kept the Cavaliers at bay all day. TheSouthpaw allowed four hits and one unearned run through seven innings ofwork with only one walk. He threw just 86 pitches on the day beforegivingway to Weaver in the eighth.

Brandon Creswell (5-6) took the loss for the Cavaliers, allowingfive runs, four earned, on seven hits with four walks over six inningsofwork.

Marvin, Gonzalez, Jon Benick, Tim LaVigne and Wyant had the onlyhits for the Cavaliers, who won the first two games of the series 9-5and15-3. Long, Trout and Barton each had two hits on the afternoon for theCollege Park nine, while the latest had two RBI.

Virginia will return to action Tuesday against Liberty at UVaBaseball Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
