CHARLESTON, S.C. – Sophomore catcher Cory Bauswell collected two doubles and drove in four runs to help Virginia Commonwealth to a 7-2 win over Virginia in Game Seven of the 1999 Winn-Dixie Shootout held at Riley Park in Charleston, SC.

Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Robbie Marvin tripled and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Tim LaVigne. The Rams responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame before the Cavaliers knotted the game at 2-2 in the second on Josh Bowling’s RBI single.

Virginia Commonwealth reclaimed the lead with a run in the bottom of the second when Kevin Elrod doubled, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch. Cory Bauswell added two-run doubles in both the fifth and seventh innings to extend the Ram advantage to 7-2.

Marc Fisher (2-0) earned the win for the Rams, allowing seven hits and two earned runs in 7 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked two while throwing 126 pitches.

Casey Kennedy (0-2) suffered the loss for Virginia after giving up 10 hits and seven earned runs in seven innings.

Jake Anthony and Kevin Elrod joined Bauswell with two hits for Virginia Commonwealth while Jonathan Benick and Josh Bowling collected two hits for the Cavaliers.

VCU will travel to meet Duke on Wednesday while Virginia hosts Penn State in a doubleheader on Saturday.
