CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Track and field/cross country head coach Randy Bungard announced that 14 student-athletes have signed national letters of intent to compete at the University of Virginia starting in the fall of 1998. In addition, 16 student-athletes have accepted offers of admission to UVa and have declared their intention to participate at Virginia.

Ten athletes have signed national letters of intent for the women’s teams, including Ellen Dwyer (Walpole, Ma./Walpole), Sarah Folse (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) and Naccole Guinn (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Jefferson School of Science and Technology). Dwyer is the Massachusetts State Champion in the two mile run and Folse is a National Footlocker Finalist in cross country. Guinn is the U.S. National Indoor High School Champion in the triple jump, and the Virginia AAA Indoor Hurdles Champion. Erika Cleary (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge), Carielle Doe (Reston, Va./South Lakes), Jessica Thomas (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough), Kathlene Meehan (Brick, N.J./Brick Township), Megan Schwartz (Morristown, N.J./Morristown), Annica White (Weston, Ma./Weston) and Bianca White (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) round out UVa’s women’s signees.

Four athletes have signed national letters of intent to compete on the men’s teams, including Matt Antunes (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), Jarrett Hagwood (Martinsville, Va./Laurel) and Brian Kollar (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial). Antunes is the Pennsylvania State Champion in the indoor and outdoor 800 meter run, and Hagwood is the Virginia AA State Champion in the 110 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles. Kollar is the 1998 National Champion and the new U.S. High School record holder in the javelin. He will compete in the World Junior Championships in France on July 28. Kollar is also the Virginia AAA Indoor Shot Put Champion. Thomas Del Sordo (Morristown,N.J./Morristown) rounds out UVa’s men’s signees.

Inhar Chong (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) is the Virginia AAA State Champion in the discus. She is joined by Jennifer Beals (Nokesville, Va./Brentsville District), Jason Bordainick (Spring Valley, N.Y.), Matthew Day (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII), Micheline Diakite (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams), Amy Eastwood (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman), Stephen Fonzone (Orefield, Pa./Parkland), Stephen Gross (State College, Pa./State College), Emily Lawrence (Rome, Ga./Darlington School), James Murdock (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood), Natalie Randolph (Washington D.C./Sidwell Friends), Mishanta Reyes (New York City, N.Y./The Spence School), Cory Smith (Alexandria, Va./Mt. Vernon), Lindsay Siegner (Stamford, Ct./Stamford), David Uribe (Dumfries, Va./Potomac Senior) and John Welch (Upper St. Clair, Pa./Upper St. Clair) as those who have accepted offers of admission to Virginia.
