CHARLOTTESVILLE – The University of Virginia men’s lacrosse team has accepted its 23rd bid to play in the annual NCAA men’ s lacrosse championships. This year is the 29th annual tournament.

The Cavaliers are seeded third and will play in the quarterfinal round vs.the winner of Delaware and UMBC, May 23, TBA, at Princeton. For Cavalier coach Dom Starsia it is his seventh bid in seven years at UVa. Starsia is in his 12th overall tournament and tenth in a row.

The Cavaliers received a bye(top four teams ) under Starsia for a fourth time( 5, 5, 2, 3, 2, 6, and now 3). He is 8-6 in NCAA play at UVa and and is 10-11 overall.

Loyola(I, 12-0, 12th bid, 12th straight; Johns Hopkins (2, 10-2, 28th bid, 28 straight ); UVa (3, 10-3, 23rd bid, seventh straight; Duke (4), 13-2, sixth bid, third in a a row; Georgetown (5 , 11-2, third bid, third straight); Delaware(6, 12-2, second bid); Hofstra(7, 12-2, ninth bid); Syracuse(8, 9-4, 20th bid, 17th straight); Notre Dame(8-5, eighth bid); UMBC, 11-3, second bid in a row), Navy(7-6, 20th bid),.and Princeton(9-3, 10th bid in a row).

UVa is 2-3 vs. the 1999 field( 9-12 overall against the field in history in NCAA play).

UVa is 7-1 vs. Delaware(last played in 1990, 20-2 win, last loss, 1987, 14-12); 12-2 vs. UMBC, last played in 1996, 20-9 won; last loss 1986, 7-6); and trails JHU, 16-49-1; last played this year, 16-15 loss; last win, 16-12, 1998).

UVa plays its game Sunday, May 23, TBA, at Princeton. First round games at Towson( May 16, include Georgetown vs. Notre Dame and Delaware vs. UMBC. First round games at Brown(May 15) include Syracuse vs. Princeton, and Hofstra vs. Army.

Quarterfinal games feature Loyola vs.Syracuse/Princeton(May 23 at Princeton (plus Virginia vs. Delaware/UMBC). Hofstra will host the other quarterfinal round, May 22, Hopkins vs. Hofstra/Navy; and Duke vs. Georgetown/ Notre Da me).

Semifinal pairings find the Loyola/Duke winners and the JHU/UVa winners at College Park., May 26, and the Finals are at Maryland, May 28, 10:55 AM.
