CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia softball team concluded play in the 1999 UVa Hoo’s Who Tournament at The Park. The tournament was hosted by Virginia. The Cavaliers opened play in the tournament with a 4-3 victory over the Akron Zips, followed by a 4-2 win over the Penn State Nittany Lions. The Cavaliers participated in the final day of the tournament with games against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and the Marshall Thundering Herd.

In Virginia’s first game with Rutgers, both teams went scoreless until the fifth inning, when the Cavaliers jumped on the scoreboard first after Chrissy Quinn (1-2, RBI, double) doubled to score Erin McMorrow (run) to give UVa a 1-0 lead. In the sixth inning, Jen Krill (1-4, RBI) hit a single that scored Lori Reese (run) to extend the Virginia lead to 2-0. The Scarlet Knights answered right back with two runs of their own in the sixth inning to knot the score at 2-2. The Cavaliers would then score three runs in the top of the seventh inning (UVa was listed as the visitor in the game) to regain the lead and open up a 5-2 advantage. Mariruth Graham (1-1, run), Corinne Good (1-4, RBI, run) and Meaghan Young (1-4, run) fueled Virginia’s scoring run in the seventh inning.

However, trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Rutgers would not go down without a fight. The Scarlet Knights responded with their back against the wall, and scored four unanswered runs to pull out a dramatic 6-5 victory. The win for Rutgers would eventually factor into the Scarlet Knights winning the 99 UVa Hoo’s Who Tournament. Quinn pitched a solid five an one-third innings, as she spread out five hits and allowed two runs while gunning-down eight Rutgers batters. Stacey Zagol replaced Quinn but was unable to log the win. Zagol gave-up six hits in one and one-third innings of work that led to four runs (two earned).

UVa would regroup quickly after its loss to Rutgers to face the awaiting Thundering Herd of Marshall. Virginia found itself down 2-1 heading into the fifth inning, before the Cavaliers scored four fifth inning runs to pull out to a 5-1 lead they would not relinquish. UVa added a late insurance run in the seventh inning to claim a 6-2 victory. Reese highlighted the Virginia offense, as the shortstop finished 2-4 at the plate with three RBI to add along with her one run scored and one stolen base. Karen Breshears (1-4, RBI, run), Good (1-1, run), Krill (1-4) and Young (1-4, run) each posted hits in the 6-2 win. Zagol recorded her sixth win on the season as she scattered six hits in the game.

With the split, Virginia’s record moves to 17-19 overall, 0-2 in the ACC. UVa finished 3-1 in the tournament, good for second place. Rutgers (3-1) claimed the tournament crown, edging Virginia in the tie-break due to the Scarlet Knights 6-5 win in their head-to-head meeting with UVa. The Cavaliers will return to action on April 3-4 when UVa travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. to face the North Carolina Tar Heels in two conference matches. Virginia will play at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 3 at at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 4.
