CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) – Donald Hand scored a career-high 41 points,including seven of Virginia’s 11 points in overtime, as the Cavaliers beatNorth Carolina State 82-79 on Sunday.

Two free throws by Hand with 4.2 seconds in regulation gave Virginia (14-12,4-9 Atlantic Coast Conference) a 71-68 lead, but Ron Kelley of N.C. State(15-10, 6-7) gathered in a baseball pass in front of the Wolfpack bench andlaunched a 3-pointer that tied the game at the buzzer.

It was only the second career 3-pointer for the 6-foot-10 center, whoseother 3-pointer came in an 82-72 victory over Virginia earlier in the season.

In the overtime, Kelley missed the second of two free throws with 1:48 leftas Virginia held a 75-74 lead. A pair of free throws by Willie Dersch pushedVirginia’s lead to 77-74 with 59 seconds left, and Kris Hunter blocked AnthonyGrundy’s shot in the lane with 40 seconds left.

Hand then hit 5-of-6 free throws as the Wolfpack was forced to foul, andJustin Gainey’s 3-point try at the overtime buzzer was off the mark.

Chris Williams had 12 points for the Cavaliers and Chezley Watson added 10.Hunter had 11 rebounds and six blocks to go with his three points.

Kelley had a career-high 24 points and nine rebounds. Gainey added 15points, Tim Wells 11 and Kenny Inge 10 for the Wolfpack. Damon Thornton grabbed14 rebounds as the Wolfpack had a 42-31 rebounding advantage.

Virginia led 44-34 at the half on the strength of Hands’ 24 points. Hand didnot miss a shot in the first half, going 7-for-7 from the field with five3-pointers and 5-for-5 from the line. He finished 11 of 17 from the field,including 5 of 7 from 3-point range, and 14 of 15 from the line.

The Cavaliers at one point made 22 consecutive free throws, going 28-for-33for the game.

The victory was the Cavalier’s 11th straight against the Wolfpack inUniversity Hall.
