Charlottesville, Va. – The Cavalier wrestling team continued their fast start this weekend as three wrestlers won titles in open tournaments this weekend in Morgantown, West Virginia and Lexington, Virginia. Two-time defending ACC Champion Jim Harshaw (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) won his first title of the year at the West Virginia Open, going 5-0, including a 9-6 defeat of ACC rival Josh Weidman from Maryland at 165.
Five other Cavaliers also attended the event, with Steve Garland (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) and Toby MacDonald (Venice, Fla./Venice) both going 3-2 on the weekend in the 133-pound bracket. Ryan Painter (Rainelle, W.V./Greenbriar) returned to his home state where he also recorded a 3-2 mark at the tournament at heavyweight. David Takseraas (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and Cartney Curnuck (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) also competed for the Cavaliers, both going 1-2 on the day with Takseraas competing at 133 and Curnuck competing at 157.
In Lexington at the Keydet Invitational, the Cavliers sent nine athletes, and all nine reached the medal round. Jeremy Kirk (Flemington, N.J./Blair Academy) and Brian Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) both won titles for the Cavaliers, at 141 and 165 respecitvely. Don Carlo-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) at 157, Robbie Moutoux (Vienna, Va./George C. Marshall) 174, Ryan McGrath (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) at 184, and Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) at 125 each took runner-up finishes at the meet. Matt Viola (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch), Matt Ounsworth (Philadelphia, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy), and Mark McLean (Plainfield, N.J./Blair Academy) each finished in fourth place at 125, 149, and 174 respectively.
The three titles this weekend brings to four the total number of titles won this year by the wrestling squad. Craig Fenstermaker (Hilton Head,S.C./Northampton (Pa.)) also ran the table at the Coppin State Open last weekend, going 3-0 en route to the medal at 184.
The Cavaliers will compete at the Keystone Classic this weekend in Philadelphia. The event is hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. In 1998, John Pozniak (State College, Pa./State College) and Martius Harding (Baltimore, Md./McDonough) both won titles at the Keystone Classic while Harshaw finished third and Jason Majestic (Patchogue, N.Y./Medford) took fifth.
