Day Three of UVa Cavalier Classic Cancelled

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The third day of the 1999 UVa Cavalier Classic Tournament was cancelled due to inclement weather. Cold temperatures and gusty winds whipped through The Park prior to the start of competition on day three of play. The tournament was hosted by the University of Virginia. The tournament field includedfive teams: Cleveland State, Eastern Michigan, North Carolina, Princeton and Virginia.

The Princeton Tigers won both of their contests with a 1-0 win over Eastern Michigan before defeating North Carolina 10-4. In the UNC contest, the Tigers scored nine unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh innings to rally from a 4-1 deficit to claim the victory over the Tar Heels.

North Carolina recorded two victories in the tournament with a 9-1 win over host Virginia and a 5-3 victory over Eastern Michigan before dropping a 10-4 decision to Princeton.

Eastern Michigan won the first game of the tournament by defeating Virginia by the score of 6-3. The Cavaliers had previously defeated the Eagles by the scores of 5-2 (March 3rd) and 3-1 (March 4th) prior to their meeting in the tournament. EMU then dropped a 5-3 decision to North Carolina before topping Cleveland State 8-4.

Virginia played the first two games in the tournament. UVa lost to Eastern Michigan 6-3 in the tournament opener, followed by a 9-1 loss to North Carolina in game-two of the tournament. Cleveland State dropped its only contest of the tournament to Eastern Michigan by the score of 8-4.

Virginia will return to action on Tuesday, March 9 when the Cavaliers travel to Buies Creek, N.C. to face the Campbell Camels in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. UVa has already faced Campbell earlier this season when the two teams squared off in a match-up in the UNC Triangular Classic Tournament in Raleigh, N.C. Virginia won that contest by the score of 4-3. UVa holds a 8-1 lead in the series meetings between the two schools.
