CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia football coach George Welsh hasannounced that Travis Griffith, Thomas Jones and Noel LaMontagne have beenselected captains for the upcoming season in voting by the team.

Griffith, a rising senior from Staunton, Va., has been a mainstay atdefensive end for the Cavaliers as a two-year starter. He was in on 40tackles last season, including three quarterback sacks. He is tied for 12thin school history with 11 career sacks.

Jones, a rising senior from Big Stone Gap, Va., was a first-teamAll-Atlantic Coast Conference selection at tailback after leading the ACCin rushing last season. He rushed for 1303 yards, the third-highest totalin school history, and needs 1190 yards to pass Tiki Barber and becomeUVa’s all-time leading rusher.

LaMontagne, a rising senior from Coopersburg, Pa., was a first-team All-ACCselection at offensive guard in 1998. He was instrumental in helpingrejuvenate Virginia’s running game and opening holes for Jones. TheCavaliers led the ACC in a variety of offensive categories last fall,including rushing yards per game (213.1), rushing touchdowns (27), yardsper rush (5.0), yards per play (6.1) and first downs per game (21.4).

The Cavaliers begin their 1999 season Sept. 4 against North Carolina inChapel Hill, N.C.

REMINDER: Virginia’s annual spring game is Saturday (Apr. 17) at AlbemarleHigh School at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free.
