CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Senior midfielder Sam Franklin gave No. 5 Virginia its first goal in nearly 230 minutes at the 80:27 mark as the Cavaliers defeated Ohio State in their final regular-season game of the year here Saturday. UVa improves to 13-2-3, while OSU falls to 7-8-3.

As the game was entering the final 10 minutes of regulation play, Matt Chulis passed the ball to Steve Totten, who the attempted a pass to Chris Albright in the box. However, a Buckeye defender knocked the pass away, but right to Franklin. The senior from Arlington blasted the ball on a one-timer past a diving OSU keeper Jon Lowery, who was shielded from the play by his own defender.

Franklin’s goal marked the first by a Cavalier since Albright’s at the 60:48 mark in the Virginia Commonwealth game Oct. 31. With a double-overtime scoreless match against Virginia Beach sandwiched in between, the made a stretch of 229 minutes and 39 seconds without a Wahoo goal – the longest such stretch since a streak of 241 minutes and nine seconds in 1982.

UVa outshot the Buckeyes 12-7, including an 8-2 advantage in the first half. Keeper Brock Yetso made five saves and is now working on a 230-minute, 57-second scoreless streak himself. As a team, the Cavaliers have not surrendered a goal in their last 232 minutes and 49 seconds.

The Cavaliers will now turn their attention to the ACC tournament, in which they will be seeded either first or second. That will be determined by the outcome of the Clemson-Wake Forest match Sunday afternoon. A Clemson loss would give UVa the regular-season title and a first-round bye in the tournament. However, a tie or a Clemson victory would make the Tigers the top seed and the Wahoos No. 2.
