CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — University of Virginia wide receiver Germane Crowell was selected in the second round of the 1998 National Football League Draft by the Detroit Lions and offensive tackle Doug Karczewski was selected in the fifth round by the New York Jets.
Crowell caught 53 passes for 969 yards and nine touchdowns during the 1997 season to lead the Virginia team in all three categories. He tied for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) lead and established a UVa record with six 100-yard receiving games last fall.
Crowell finished his UVa career with 122 receptions for 2,142 yards (average of 17.6 yards a catch) and 19 touchdowns. He ranks first on Virginia’s career list for 100-yard receiving games with nine, is second in receptions, and fourth in yards receiving and touchdown receptions.
Karczewski was one of Virginia’s co-captains and a second-team All-ACC selection in 1997. He was a starter at offensive tackle for the Cavaliers each of the last two seasons.
