AMHERST, Mass.–Virginia’s Jay Jalbert scored five goals andrecorded one assist and Jamie Leachman notched four goals to leadsixth-seeded Virginia to a 16-10 win over Hobart in the first round of theNCAA Lacrosse Tournament at Garber Field at the University ofMassachusetts.

The Cavaliers were held scoreless in the first quarter untilJalbert put Virginia on the scoreboard with his first goal with 6:26 on theclock in the second quarter. The Cavaliers held a 3-2 lead a half-time.

Hobart opened the third quarter of play with three straight goalsbefore Jalbert connected on his third goal of the day to make the score 5-4in favor of Hobart. Both teams exchanged goals before Virginia scoredfour straight goals, including three in the final 51 seconds of the thirdquarter to build a 9-7 lead. Drew McKnight scored the tying goal with 51seconds on the clock and Leachman scored the go-ahead goal with 39 secondsto put the Cavaliers in the lead for good. Leachman scored again with 10seconds remaining in the quarter.

Leachman opened the final stanza with a goal and the Cavaliersoutscored the Statesmen 7-3 to close out the game.

The Cavaliers out-shot Hobart 70-29 while Hobart goalie, FredPawlikowski recorded 28 saves for the game, with 22 saves coming in thefirst two quarters. Virginia goalie, Chris Sanderson, recorded seven saves.

Virginia will meet third seeded Syracuse in the NCAA Quarterfinalson May 16 at Hofstra University .
