McKnight, Radebaugh Each Score Four Goals to Lead Cavs

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Attackmen Drew McKnight and Tucker Radebaugh scoredfour goals each to lead Virginia to a 13-4 win over Maryland in men’slacrosse action today at Klckner Stadium. The win was Virginia’s ACCopener and improved the Cavaliers’ record to 5-2 overall. The fifth-rankedTerrapins drop to 6-2 overall and 1-2 in the ACC.

The Virginia defense also proved outstanding today, limiting the visitingTerrapins to one goal in the final 54 minutes of the game as freshmangoalie Derek Kenney recorded eight saves on the afternoon. Kenney wasforced to make just one save in the second half as the Cavaliers controlledthe ball for most of the final 30 minutes.

The Cavaliers took the early lead on McKnight’s first goal of the afternoonless than three minutes into the contest. The Terrapins responded withthree consecutive goals in just over a minute as Matt Brock, Jeff Shirk andBrian Zeller tallied for Maryland. The Terps’ third goal came with 9:14remaining in the first quarter.

Virginia countered Maryland’s run with a nine-goal run of its own withMcKnight and Radebaugh each scoring three times during the run. McKnight’soverhand crank off a Gill feed with 14:15 left in the second quarter provedto be the winner for the Cavaliers. The Cavaliers led 7-3 at halftime andout-scored Maryland 6-1 in the second half.

“We mixed it up pretty well,” said Radebaugh. “We got a lot of bounces, butyou have to realize that we created a lot of those bounces. The play of ourdefense and our goalie, and winning the faceoffs is what won the game forus.”

The Cavaliers return to action a week from today at home against NorthCarolina. The game is scheduled to face-off at 3 p.m.
