Men's Basketball Squad Downs Virginia Tech

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Chris Wlliams scored 17 points, and Virginia limitedVirginia Tech to one field goal in the first 8 1/2 minutes of the second halfWednesday en route to a 64-55 victory over the Hokies.
Adam Hall, like Williams a freshman, added 12 points for the Cavaliers(11-10), who improved to 10-3 against non-conference opponents. It wasVirginia’s ninth victory in the last 11 games against the Hokies.
Virginia Tech (6-11) lost for the seventh time in its last eight games, theonly victory a surprise 73-64 overtime victory at Dayton on Jan. 21. That lossended the Flyers’ Atlantic 10 home winning streak at 14 games.
Virginia led 33-30 at halftime, but outscored the Hokies 13-4 over the first8:35 after the break as Virginia Tech missed 12 of its first 13 shots. Hall andDonald Hand had four points each in the run and Willie Dersch hit a 3-pointer,the Cavaliers’ first after they came in averaging 7.2.
Dersch added 14 points and Hand 13, while Williams had 13 rebounds.
Trailing by as many as 12 several times after the Virginia burst, the Hokiesdrew as close as eight in the closing minutes, but got no closer.
Eddie Lucas and Rolan Roberts led Virginia Tech with 13 points each, but theHokies were terrible from the field, making 19-of-69, 27.5 percent.
It was the 113th meeting between the schools. Virginia leads 69-44.
Colin Ducharme, the only player on either roster from Richmond, missed his20th straight game with a broken left ankle. His only appearance came inVirginia’s Nov. 13 victory over Virginia Commonwealth, also in Richmond.
