DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C.–The University of Virginia golf team is in 14th place after the second round of the 23-team NCAA East Regional Golf Tournament on Friday (May 15). Georgia Tech leads the tournament with a team score of 17-under-par 559. Clemson is three strokes back in second place with a team score of 14-under-par 562. Virginia is 14th with a team score of 588.

UVa’s James Driscoll is tied for fourth in the individual competition after shooting a 4-under-par 68 on the Melrose Golf Course on Friday. He has a 36-hole total of 5-under-par 139 (71-68). Max Harris of North Carolina (75-64) also has a total of 139.

Matt Kuchar of Georgia Tech is the leader in the individual competition with an 11-under-par total of 133 after rounds of 64 and 69. David Christensen of East Tennessee State (70-68) and Joey Maxon of Clemson (68-70) are tied for second place in the individual competition with 6-under-par totals of 138.

The other members of the Virginia team participating in the tournament are Cameron Yancey (74-73 147), Andrea Brotto (76-72 148), Lewis Chitengwa (78-76 154) and Mike Mitchell (81-77 158).

The 54-hole tournamnt concludes on Saturday (May 16). The top 11 teams and two individuals will advance to the 1998 NCAA Championship Tournament scheduled for May 27-30 in Albuquerque, N.M.
