SAN JUAN, P.R. — The University of Virginia golf team is tied with East Tennessee State for 10th place after the first day of play at the Puerto Rico Golf Classic at the Rio Mar Country Club in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This is the Cavaliers’ first tournament of the spring season.

The Cavaliers shot a 297 in this morning’s first round and a 307 in the afternoon’s round for a 36-hole total of 604 (+28). The Cavaliers stood in ninth place after the morning round, but didn’t help themselves by shooting a 307 in the afternoon to fall into the tie for 10th.

North Carolina State holds a six-stroke lead over Georgia Tech and Columbus State with an even-par 576.

Sophomore James Driscoll is Virginia’s low man. He is among four golfers tied for 11th place with a 1-over par 145. Driscoll shot a 70 in the morning and a 75 in the day’s second round.

Georgia Tech’s Matt Kuchar fired a 6-under par 138 (68-70) and holds a one-stroke lead over Wilfredo Morales of Columbus State. N.C. State’s Tim Clark is third, two shots behind Kuchar.

Freshman Cameron Yancey stands tied for 34th for Virginia with an 8-over 152 (76-76).

The tournament concludes with 18 holes tomorrow.
