CHARLOTTESVILLE-University of Virginia freshman forward Chris Williams is a 1999 second-team All-Freshman selection by Basketball News.

Williams, from Birmingham, Ala., was the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Rookie of the Year for the 1998-99 season. He also earned third-team All-ACC honors and was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team. He was the top vote-getter for the ACC All-Freshman Team.

The 6-6 Williams averaged 16.8 points and 7.5 rebounds a game for the Cavaliers during the 1998-99 season. He led the team in rebounding and field goal percentage (51.2 percent, 188-367), and was second on the team in scoring and blocked shots (41, 1.4 bpg.). He also shot 73.2 percent from the free throw line (93-127), 30 percent (36-120) from three-point range, and was third on the team in assists (55, 1.8 apg.) and steals (45, 1.5 spg.).

Williams played in all 30 of Virginia’s games and started 28. He was named ACC Rookie of the Week four times during the season and had six double-doubles in points and rebounds. He scored in double figures 27 times and scored nine points in each of the games he wasn’t in double figures. Williams established a UVA freshman single-game scoring record with 34 points against Liberty University on December 8.

Joining Williams on Basketball News’ second-team All-Freshman are Corey Maggette (Duke), JaRon Rush (UCLA), Kris Lang (North Carolina) and Cory Bradford (Illinois). Basketball News’ first-team All-Freshman selections include Quentin Richardson (DePaul), Troy Murphy (Notre Dame), Michael Wright (Arizona), Erick Barkley (St. John’s) and Mike Miller (Florida).
