CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Donald Hand scored 23 points, 15 of them duringa second-half Virginia surge, as the Cavaliers bounced back from a slow startTuesday night to beat VMI 82-64.

The Cavaliers (7-4) were leading by just two with 16:06 left in the secondhalf when Hand hit two free throws to spark a 10-2 Cavalier run that putVirginia ahead for good. VMI (3-7) closed the gap to five points with 4:57remaining, but Hand hit seven of eight free throws in the closing minutes asVirginia used a 16-2 run to seal the win.

Hand was 15-of-16 from the line for the Cavaliers, who hit 68 percent oftheir free throws. Chris Williams had 19 points and 15 rebounds, 12 of them onthe defensive glass, and Chezley Watson added 12 for Virginia.

Virginia scored 32 points on free throws as three VMI starters fouled out.

Jason Bell led VMI with 21 points and Nick Richardson had 11. VMI shot just33 percent in the second half, hitting 13-of-39 from the field.
